Joe Sheftel Gallery and Koenig & Clinton
Design Curio exhibition at Design Miami/ 2014

Joe Sheftel Gallery and Koenig & Clinton

For the inaugural edition of Design Miami’s Design Curio, Koenig & Clinton and Joe Sheftel Gallery partner to present furniture and lighting by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass alongside Memphis table and floor lamps. The booth connects the early work of Ettore Sottsass as a precursor to The Memphis Group by literally and metaphorically illuminating Sottsass’ furniture with Memphis and Sottsass wall, ceiling and table mounted lights.

Drawing inspiration from Memphis style and elements of Memphis furniture, each booth wall will be painted its own bright color.  The booth is installed with several important and rare works including the Beverly, Carlton and Tartar as well as unique prototypes of lighting and furniture. To maximize ‘in the round’ views of the furniture, lighting includes wall sconces and chandeliers.

This richly saturated presentation enthusiastically looks back at how as these objects were initially displayed. In so doing, we hope to provide an opportunity for international audiences to consider how the legacies of Sottsass and Memphis continue to influence and impact art and design aesthetics. Moreover, this curated presentation will also offer Design Miami’s audiences an exclusive preview into two-part exhibition of The Memphis Group that will take place immediately after Design Curio in New York at Koenig & Clinton as well as Joe Sheftel galleries.
